Use this small-scale 3D printing area calculator to estimate the usable area of a rectangular printer bed after allowing for an edge margin. It also compares that space with your model footprint and chosen spacing to estimate how many copies may fit on one layer.

How it works

The calculator finds the full rectangular bed area, then subtracts the selected edge margin from both dimensions to find usable width and length. It calculates the model footprint separately. For the layout estimate, it adds the selected spacing to each model dimension, counts the number of whole model spaces that fit across and along the usable bed, and multiplies those counts. This is a simple grid estimate; rotating or nesting models can sometimes fit more parts.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between bed area and usable print area?

Bed area is the full rectangular build plate area. Usable print area excludes the edge margin you choose, leaving a safer space for placing models.

Why should I leave an edge margin on a 3D printer bed?

An edge margin can help avoid bed clips, uneven edge heating, probing limits, purge lines, and reduced adhesion near the outside of the plate.

Does this calculator include model height?

No. It calculates the two-dimensional footprint on the build plate. Check the printer's maximum Z height separately to confirm that the model fits vertically.

Can I rotate a model to fit more parts on the bed?

Possibly. This calculator uses a straight rectangular grid with the model dimensions entered. Rotating, staggering, or nesting parts may produce a more efficient layout.

Should I include a brim in the model dimensions?

For planning, either include the brim in the model width and length or add enough spacing to allow for it. The required allowance depends on the brim width and your slicer settings.

Why might fewer models fit in my slicer than this calculator shows?

Your slicer may add skirts, purge lines, supports, brims, or printer-specific exclusion zones. Irregular shapes and adhesion requirements can also reduce the practical capacity.
