What does a 3D printing cost calculator estimate?

It estimates the direct cost to make one part from filament, material waste, electricity, machine running cost, and labor or post-processing.

What filament weight should I enter?

Enter the estimated weight of the finished part before waste, unless your slicer already gives a total that includes supports and purge material.

What should I enter for labor cost?

Enter the estimated monetary cost of setup, monitoring, removal, cleanup, sanding, painting, assembly, or other part-specific work.

Can the calculator be used for PLA, PETG, ABS, or other materials?

Yes. Use the applicable price per kilogram and an appropriate waste allowance for the material and print setup.

How is waste added to filament use?

The calculator multiplies filament weight by one plus the waste percentage divided by 100.

Why is filament weight converted to kilograms?

Filament is commonly priced per kilogram, while print estimates are commonly given in grams. Dividing grams by 1,000 aligns the units.

How is printer electricity use calculated?

Average printer power in watts is divided by 1,000 and multiplied by print hours to estimate kilowatt-hours.

What is cost per print hour?

It is total estimated production cost divided by print time. It is a useful comparison measure for jobs of different lengths.

Accuracy and assumptions

How accurate is the estimate?

It is only as accurate as the inputs. Slicer estimates, measured power use, waste allowance, machine cost, and labor assumptions can all change the result.

Should I measure printer power draw?

A measured average draw can provide a closer electricity estimate than using a maximum nameplate wattage, but either remains an estimate.

Does the calculator include failed prints?

It does not model failures separately. You can include an expected amount through the material waste allowance and, where relevant, your labor or machine allowance.

Does it include maintenance and depreciation?

Only if you include them in machine cost per hour. That value is intentionally user-defined because ownership costs vary.

Pricing and business use

Is total printing cost the same as a selling price?

No. The total is an estimated production cost. A selling price may need additional allowances for overhead, packaging, delivery, fees, taxes, and profit.

Should design time be included?

If design time is relevant to the job, add it separately to labor or another cost category because it is not included automatically.

Are shipping and packaging included?

No. Add those costs separately when they apply to the project.

Can I compare in-house printing with buying a part?

Yes, compare the estimated all-in production cost with the purchase option while making sure both figures include comparable items such as delivery, finishing, and lead time.
