3D Printing Yield (Commercial) Calculator

Estimate accepted 3D printed parts per build, day, and week using build capacity, cycle time, printer fleet size, and yield rates.

Your Details

Overview

Use this commercial 3D printing yield calculator to estimate how many finished, accepted parts your printer fleet can produce. Enter the loaded part count, printing and turnaround times, available production hours, and realistic print and post-processing yield rates.

How it works

The calculator first adds print time and turnaround time to find the complete cycle time for one build. It divides scheduled daily operating hours by that cycle time to estimate builds per printer per day. The loaded part count is then multiplied by the print success rate and post-processing pass rate to estimate accepted parts per build. Finally, it scales that result by the number of printers and operating days.

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Enter the number of parts loaded into a typical print build.
  2. 2Add the print time and the turnaround time between builds.
  3. 3Enter the number of available printers and scheduled operating hours.
  4. 4Set your expected print success and post-processing pass rates.
  5. 5Review the estimated accepted output per build, day, and week.

With 120 parts per build, a 21-hour total cycle, three printers, and an 85.5% combined yield, the estimated output is about 293 accepted parts per day and 1,465 per five-day week.

Frequently asked questions

What is 3D printing yield?

3D printing yield is the share of loaded parts that become usable finished parts after printing, finishing, and quality checks.

Why does turnaround time affect production output?

Turnaround time reduces the number of complete build cycles a printer can run. It can include cooling, unloading, cleaning, setup, loading, and inspection activities.

How is the combined yield rate calculated?

The calculator multiplies the print success rate by the post-processing pass rate. For example, a 90% print success rate and 95% pass rate produce an 85.5% combined yield.

Should I use 24 operating hours per day?

Use 24 hours only when the printers can be actively scheduled around the clock. Otherwise, enter the realistic daily hours available for production and support activities.

Does the calculator include maintenance downtime?

No. To account for expected downtime, reduce operating hours, increase turnaround time, or use conservative yield assumptions.

Can I use this calculator for different 3D printing technologies?

Yes. It can be used for additive manufacturing processes when you can estimate parts per build, full cycle time, available operating time, and expected yield.

Assumptions and warnings

Assumptions

  • Each printer has similar capacity, cycle time, and expected quality performance.
  • The stated parts per build represents a consistently achievable build layout.
  • Print success rate and post-processing pass rate are applied independently to the loaded parts.
  • The estimate uses scheduled operating hours and does not separately model unplanned downtime, maintenance, material shortages, or staffing constraints.

Warnings

  • This calculator provides an operational estimate only. Actual output can vary with machine availability, material behavior, build geometry, quality requirements, and production workflow.
