What does the A/B Testing Audio Bitrate Calculator estimate?
It estimates per-user audio transfer, total transfer for each test group, and Variant B's delivery-cost difference compared with Variant A.
What should I enter for users in each variant?
Enter the users assigned to one group, not the combined audience, when the A and B groups are equal in size.
Can I use a zero delivery cost?
Yes. The transfer estimates still work, while the estimated delivery-cost difference will be zero.
Does the calculator decide which bitrate is better?
No. It quantifies transfer and estimated delivery cost; quality and experiment outcomes need to be evaluated separately.
Data and bitrate calculations

Is bitrate entered in kbps or Mbps?
Enter kilobits per second, or kbps. For example, 128 kbps should be entered as 128.
How is listening time converted to data usage?
Daily minutes are multiplied by test days and 60 to get listening seconds. The bitrate is then applied to those seconds and converted to GB.
Why is there a divide-by-8 step?
Bitrates are expressed in bits, while data storage and transfer units are based on bytes. Eight bits equal one byte.
Why does the calculator use 1,024 in the GB conversion?
It follows the calculator's binary conversion assumption: 1 GB equals 1,024 MB and 1 MB equals 1,024 KB.
Accuracy and costs

Why might actual audio data transfer be different?
Usage can vary because of adaptive bitrate playback, variable bitrate encoding, protocol overhead, retries, caching, and actual listener behavior.
Does the calculator include encoding and storage costs?
No. It estimates audio transfer and an optional delivery charge per GB only.
Does it include audio quality or conversion results?
No. The model compares resource use, not sound quality, user preference, engagement, or statistical significance.
What delivery cost per GB should I use?
Use an estimated effective CDN or egress charge relevant to your traffic. Review current provider terms and billing definitions before relying on a budget estimate.

Do A and B need the same number of users?
Equal groups make the comparison straightforward. If group sizes differ, estimate each group using its own user count and compare the resulting totals.
What if Variant B has a lower bitrate than Variant A?
The calculated Variant B cost difference will be negative, indicating estimated delivery savings relative to Variant A.
Should I include users who never start playback?
Use expected active listeners and their expected listening time where possible. Including inactive assigned users can overstate transfer.
Can I use average listening time for a mixed audience?
Yes, as a planning simplification. Segmenting highly different listener groups can produce a more representative estimate.
How is audio data usage per user calculated?
The calculator multiplies bitrate by total listening seconds, divides by 8, and converts the result to GB.
