What is character set size?

It is the number of characters that could appear in each position. Lowercase letters have 26 possibilities, while letters, digits, and common symbols may total about 94.

How is the search space calculated?

The calculator raises the character set size to the password length. For example, a random 12-character password from 94 characters has 94^12 possible combinations.

How is the annual guess budget calculated?

It multiplies the effective guesses per second by 31,536,000, the number of seconds in a 365-day year.

Why is the annual likelihood capped at 100%?

A probability cannot exceed 100%. The cap prevents the simplified annual guess-budget ratio from displaying a larger value.

What is expected crack time?

It is the average time for exhaustive guessing to find a uniformly random password, assuming the correct password is found halfway through the possible combinations.

Does expected crack time mean an attacker needs exactly that long?

No. It is an average model. A particular password could be found earlier or later depending on its position in the guessing order and the actual attack conditions.
