What does the A/B Testing Upload Time (Per-User) Calculator do?

It estimates how long one user takes to upload Variant A and Variant B, then reports the time difference and relative reduction.

Is this a test significance calculator?

No. It compares estimated transfer durations. It does not determine statistical significance, conversion impact, or experiment sample size.

What does per-user mean?

It means the output describes one file upload by one user, not the combined time or bandwidth demand for all users.

Can the calculator compare a larger Variant B?

Yes. In that case, Variant B will take longer and the reported saving or reduction can be negative.

Inputs and units

How to choose file size, upload speed, and overhead values.

Should file size be entered in MB or MiB?

Enter the displayed decimal MB value used in your scenario. The calculator treats 1 MB as 8 megabits for the transfer-time conversion.

What upload speed should I enter?

Use a representative sustained upstream speed for the intended audience or test scenario, rather than a maximum advertised connection speed.

Why should I not use download speed?

The file travels from the user's device to the service, so the relevant connection measure is upstream upload speed.

What is transfer overhead?

It is an allowance for connection capacity that is not available for file payload data because of protocol data, encryption, retries, and related effects.

Calculation and interpretation

How estimated time, savings, and percentage reduction are derived.

Why does the formula multiply the file size by 8?

File size is entered in megabytes while connection speed is in megabits per second. There are eight bits in one byte.

How is effective upload speed calculated?

The calculator multiplies upload speed by one minus the overhead percentage divided by 100.

What does a 25% upload time reduction mean?

Under the same connection assumptions, Variant B takes one-quarter less transfer time than Variant A.

Can the upload time saving exceed the file-size reduction?

Not in this model when both variants use the same speed and overhead. Time changes directly with file size.

Accuracy and real-world use

Factors that can cause an actual transfer to differ from the estimate.

Why might the actual upload take longer than the estimate?

Variable network quality, Wi-Fi interference, competing traffic, retries, server response, and browser processing can add delay.

Does the calculator include server processing time?

No. It estimates file transfer time only and excludes validation, transcoding, storage, and other post-upload processing.

Can I use this for several uploads in one session?

You can calculate each file separately or combine file sizes if they behave as one transfer. Sequential uploads may also include extra fixed delays.

Does a smaller file guarantee a better overall experience?

It reduces the modeled transfer time under the same network conditions, but overall experience can also depend on quality, processing, and interface behavior.
