Home Heating Cost Calculator

Estimate the running cost of heating your home based on heater power, daily usage, energy price and heating season length.

Your Details

Overview

This Home Heating Cost Calculator helps you estimate how much it may cost to heat your home using your heater power, daily usage hours, energy price and heating season length. It gives quick daily, monthly and seasonal cost estimates to help with budgeting and comparing heating habits.

How it works

The calculator multiplies heater power in kW by the number of hours used per day to estimate daily energy consumption in kWh. It then multiplies that energy use by your energy rate to estimate the daily cost. Monthly cost is based on the number of heating days per month, and seasonal cost multiplies the monthly estimate by the number of heating months you enter.

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Enter your heater or heating system power in kW.
  2. 2Add the average number of hours you use heating each day.
  3. 3Enter your energy price per kWh.
  4. 4Set the number of heating days in a typical month.
  5. 5Enter how many months your heating season lasts.
  6. 6Review the estimated daily, monthly and seasonal heating cost.

Frequently asked questions

What does this Home Heating Cost Calculator estimate?

It estimates your home heating energy use and cost per day, per month and across the full heating season.

Do I need to enter my energy price per kWh?

Yes. The calculator uses your unit rate per kWh to estimate heating cost, so using the rate from your bill will give a more useful estimate.

Can I use this for electric heaters only?

It works best for systems where you know the power draw in kW and the cost per kWh. It is especially useful for electric heating.

Why might my real heating bill be different?

Actual bills can differ because of changing weather, thermostat adjustments, insulation quality, system cycling, tariff changes and fixed charges.

How do I find my heater power?

You can usually find it on the appliance label, product manual or manufacturer specifications, often listed in watts or kilowatts.

Assumptions and warnings

Assumptions

  • Results are estimates based on average daily usage and a constant energy rate.
  • The calculator assumes your heating system uses the entered power level consistently while running.
  • It does not include standing charges, maintenance costs or changes in tariff during the season.
  • Monthly and seasonal estimates assume similar usage patterns throughout the heating period.

Warnings

  • Actual heating costs can vary with insulation, weather, thermostat settings and system efficiency.
  • Check your energy bill or tariff details for the most accurate unit rate.
