Your Details

Overview

This UK Cost of Living Calculator helps you estimate how much you spend each month and year on housing, bills, groceries, transport and other day-to-day costs. It can also show how your total spending compares with your monthly take-home income.

How it works

The calculator adds together your main monthly living expenses to estimate your essential costs, then adds discretionary spending to produce a total monthly cost of living. It also multiplies the monthly total by 12 for an annual estimate and compares your spending with your net monthly income to show your remaining balance and the percentage of income used.

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Enter your monthly net income after tax.
  2. 2Add your monthly rent or mortgage payment.
  3. 3Include utilities, council tax, groceries and transport costs.
  4. 4Enter any other essential monthly costs such as insurance or childcare.
  5. 5Add your discretionary spending and review your total monthly cost and remaining balance.

Frequently asked questions

What does this UK Cost of Living Calculator estimate?

It estimates your monthly and annual living costs in the UK using the spending figures you enter for housing, bills, food, transport and other expenses.

Should I use gross or net income?

Use your net monthly income, which is your take-home pay after tax, National Insurance and other deductions.

Does this calculator include council tax?

Yes, you can include council tax within the utilities and council tax field if you pay it as part of your regular monthly costs.

Can I use this calculator for London or other UK cities?

Yes, but you need to enter your own local costs because housing, transport and other expenses can vary a lot between areas.

Are annual or irregular costs included?

Not automatically. If you have regular annual bills, you may want to convert them into a monthly average and add them to other essential costs.

What if my monthly balance is negative?

A negative balance means your entered monthly spending is higher than your net income, so you may need to reduce costs, increase income or review your budget assumptions.
