Your Details

Cost method

Choose whether to calculate travel cost using a cost per mile rate or a fixed public transport fare.

Overview

The Freelance Commuting Cost Calculator helps you estimate how much it costs to travel for freelance work. Enter your round-trip distance or fixed fare, how often you commute each month, and your typical billable hours to see the cost per trip, monthly cost, yearly cost, and the impact on your billable time.

How it works

This calculator first works out the cost of one full return commute using either a mileage rate or a fixed fare. It then multiplies that by your monthly commute days to estimate a monthly total and multiplies that monthly figure by 12 for an annual estimate. It also divides your monthly commuting cost by your monthly billable hours on commute days to show how much travel adds to each billable hour.

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Choose whether you want to calculate by cost per mile or fixed fare per trip.
  2. 2Enter your round-trip distance if you are using a mileage-based estimate.
  3. 3Add your cost per mile or your fixed fare for one return journey.
  4. 4Enter how many days per month you usually commute for freelance work.
  5. 5Enter your average billable hours on those commute days.
  6. 6Review the cost per trip, monthly commuting cost, annual cost, and hourly impact.

With 60 billable hours per month on commute days, the commuting cost is about 2.60 per billable hour.

Frequently asked questions

What does this calculator estimate?

It estimates the cost of commuting for freelance work per trip, per month, and per year, along with the average cost per billable hour.

Should I use cost per mile or fixed fare?

Use cost per mile if you drive and want to estimate running costs based on distance. Use fixed fare if you usually pay the same amount for public transport each return trip.

Does this include parking, tolls, or other travel expenses?

Not unless you build those costs into your cost per mile or fixed fare input. The calculator only uses the values you enter.

Why is cost per billable hour useful?

It helps you see how commuting affects your effective earnings and can help when budgeting or setting freelance rates.

Can I use this for more than one client location?

This version is best for one typical commute pattern. If you travel to multiple locations, calculate each one separately and compare the results.

Is the annual commuting cost exact?

No. It is a simple estimate based on your monthly pattern multiplied by 12, so actual yearly costs may differ.
