Freelance Pension Contribution Calculator
Estimate how much you could contribute to a pension as a freelancer based on your income, expenses, target savings rate and tax relief assumption.
Overview
This freelance pension contribution calculator helps you estimate a realistic retirement saving target based on your annual freelance revenue, business expenses, existing retirement savings and preferred savings rate. It also shows an estimated tax relief benefit and your net cost after that relief.
How it works
The calculator first estimates your net freelance income by subtracting business expenses from annual revenue. It then applies your chosen pension savings rate to that net income to set an annual target. Any other retirement savings are subtracted to show the remaining contribution needed. Finally, the calculator estimates tax relief by applying your chosen relief rate and shows the effective cost after that estimated benefit.

Frequently asked questions
What does this calculator estimate?
It estimates a suggested pension contribution for a freelancer based on net freelance income, your target savings rate and any other retirement savings you already make.
Does this calculator include business expenses?
Yes. It subtracts annual business expenses from annual freelance revenue to estimate net freelance income before applying your target savings rate.
What is the target pension savings rate?
It is the percentage of your net freelance income that you want to set aside for retirement each year.
Why does the calculator ask for other retirement savings?
This helps avoid double counting by reducing the additional pension amount still needed to reach your overall retirement savings target.
How is tax relief estimated?
The calculator applies your chosen tax relief percentage to the suggested annual pension contribution. This is a simplified estimate and actual relief may differ.
Can I use this calculator if my income changes each month?
Yes. You can use your expected annual totals based on recent invoices, average earnings or a conservative yearly estimate.
