Debt Payoff Calculator
Estimate how long it may take to pay off debt and how much interest you could pay based on your balance, rate and monthly payment.
Overview
A debt payoff calculator helps you estimate how long it may take to clear a balance using your current debt amount, annual interest rate and planned monthly payment. You can also add an extra monthly payment to see how paying more could reduce your payoff time and total interest.
How it works
The calculator converts the annual interest rate into a monthly rate and compares it with your total monthly payment. It then estimates how many months it would take for repeated monthly payments to reduce the balance to zero. Total repayment is estimated from the payment amount and payoff period, and total interest is the amount paid above the original balance.
How to use this calculator
- 1Enter your current debt balance.
- 2Add the annual interest rate charged on the debt.
- 3Enter your regular monthly payment.
- 4Include any extra monthly payment if you plan to pay more.
- 5Review the estimated payoff time, total paid and total interest.
Example Calculation
Current debt balance
$10,000
Annual interest rate
18%
Monthly payment
$300
Extra monthly payment
$50
Time to pay off debt
38 months
For a debt balance of 10000 at 18% interest with total monthly payments of 350, the debt would be paid off in about 39 months, with total repayment of roughly 13489 and interest of about 3489.
Frequently asked questions
What does this debt payoff calculator estimate?
It estimates how long it may take to pay off a debt, how much you may pay in total and how much of that total could be interest.
What happens if I add an extra monthly payment?
An extra monthly payment usually shortens the payoff period and reduces the total interest paid, because the balance falls faster.
Can this calculator be used for credit cards or personal loans?
Yes. It can be used for many types of debt as long as you know the balance, interest rate and monthly payment amount.
Why does the calculator show that my payment may not cover interest?
If your monthly payment is less than or close to the monthly interest charge, the balance may fall very slowly or may not fall at all.
Does this include fees or changing interest rates?
No. This version assumes a fixed rate and fixed monthly payments, so it does not account for changing rates, fees or missed payments.
