National Insurance Calculator
Estimate your employee National Insurance contributions from your gross pay, pay frequency, and contribution rates.
Overview
Use this National Insurance Calculator to estimate how much employee NI may be deducted from your pay for a weekly, monthly, or annual pay period. Enter your gross pay, select your pay frequency, and use the relevant thresholds and rates to see your estimated NI and pay after NI.
How it works
The calculator applies a simplified employee National Insurance method. Earnings up to the primary threshold are not charged at the main rate. Earnings between the primary threshold and the upper earnings limit are charged at the main NI rate. Earnings above the upper earnings limit are charged at the additional NI rate. The total NI is then subtracted from gross pay to show pay after NI only.

- 3Enter the primary threshold for that pay period.

Frequently asked questions
What does this National Insurance Calculator estimate?
It estimates employee National Insurance contributions for a pay period based on your gross pay, thresholds, and contribution rates.
Does this calculator include income tax?
No. It only estimates employee National Insurance, so your actual take-home pay may be lower after tax and other deductions.
Why do I need to enter thresholds and rates?
National Insurance thresholds and rates can change over time, so entering them lets you use current figures for your pay period.
Should I use weekly, monthly, or annual values?
Use the same period for your gross pay and thresholds. For example, if you enter monthly pay, use monthly thresholds and limits.
Will this match my payslip exactly?
Not always. Payroll systems may apply category letters, exact rounding rules, and other adjustments that are not included here.
Can this calculator be used for self-employed NI?
No. This version is designed for standard employee NI estimates and does not calculate self-employed contributions.
