Your Details

Overview

Use this Savings Goal Calculator to estimate how much you may need to save regularly to reach a target amount. Enter your savings goal, current savings, expected annual interest rate, timeframe and contribution frequency to see the required contribution and projected growth.

How it works

The calculator starts with your current savings, grows that amount using the annual interest rate over your chosen timeframe, and then estimates the regular contribution needed to make up the remaining gap to your target. If interest is zero, it simply divides the remaining amount by the number of saving periods. If interest is positive, it uses a standard future value of a series formula to estimate the required contribution.

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Enter your target savings amount.
  2. 2Add the amount you already have saved.
  3. 3Enter the annual interest rate you expect to earn.
  4. 4Choose how many years you have to save.
  5. 5Select how often you plan to contribute and review the estimated amount needed.

Example Calculation

Savings goal

$20,000

Current savings

$5,000

Annual interest rate

4%

Timeframe

5

Contribution frequency

monthly

Required regular contribution

$6,134.97

If your goal is 20000, you already have 5000 saved, expect 4% annual interest and plan to save for 5 years with monthly contributions, you would need to contribute roughly 204 per month to reach your target.

Frequently asked questions

What does this Savings Goal Calculator estimate?

It estimates the regular contribution needed to reach a target savings amount within a set timeframe, taking your starting balance and interest rate into account.

Does the calculator include compound interest?

Yes. It applies compound growth to your current savings and to regular contributions based on the selected contribution frequency.

What if my interest rate is 0%?

If the rate is 0%, the calculator spreads the remaining amount needed evenly across the saving periods.

Can I use this calculator for investing as well as saving?

Yes, but investment returns are not guaranteed. The result is only an estimate based on the rate you enter.

Why might my actual savings result be different?

Actual results can differ because rates may change, contributions may vary, and fees, taxes or timing differences can affect the final balance.
