What does the 3D Printing Quality (Small-Scale) Calculator estimate?
It estimates a setting-based quality score, a fine-detail layer-height target, an approximate layer count, and a feature-to-line ratio for a small FDM or FFF model.
Is this calculator only for miniatures?
No. It can be used for any relatively small model where fine walls, raised details, gaps, or surface stepping matter.
What type of 3D printing is this calculation for?
It is designed for FDM or FFF printing with a round nozzle and extruded filament.
Does the score predict the exact finish of my print?
No. It is a quick comparison of selected layer height and feature width. Real results also depend on printer condition, material, tuning, model geometry, and slicer settings.
Nozzle, layer height, and line width

What layer height does the calculator recommend for fine detail?
It uses one-quarter of the nozzle diameter. A 0.4 mm nozzle produces a 0.10 mm fine-detail starting target.
Can I use a layer height lower than the recommended target?
Yes. In this formula, a layer height at or below the target receives the maximum vertical detail score. Lower layers normally increase layer count.
Should line width always equal nozzle diameter?
Not necessarily. The calculator uses the line width entered from your slicer, which may be close to but does not have to equal nozzle diameter.
Does a smaller nozzle always improve a model?
A smaller nozzle can help with narrow features and thin walls, but it can increase print time and may require different speeds, flow settings, and tuning.
Why does nozzle diameter affect the recommended layer height?
The calculation sets the target as 25% of nozzle diameter. Smaller nozzles therefore have lower fine-detail layer-height targets.
Feature size and quality score
How the smallest feature and the combined score should be interpreted.
What is the feature-to-line ratio?
It is smallest feature divided by line width. It expresses the narrowest intended feature as a multiple of the planned extrusion line width.
What does a feature-to-line ratio below 1 mean?
It means the feature is narrower than one selected line width. Depending on the slicer and geometry, it may be changed, merged, or omitted.
Why is the horizontal detail score capped at 100?
The calculator treats a feature that is at least one line wide as fully supported for this simple feature-width check. Extra width does not raise the score above 100.
How is the small-scale quality score calculated?
It is the rounded sum of 60% of the vertical detail score and 40% of the horizontal detail score.
Can a 100% score guarantee fine details will print?
No. The score does not model cooling, material flow, vibration, thin-wall slicer handling, supports, or printer calibration.
Accuracy and practical use

Why might a print look worse than the calculated score?
Temperature, speed, cooling, retraction, pressure control, filament variation, ringing, nozzle wear, orientation, and model design can all affect visible detail.
Does model orientation matter for small details?
Yes. Orientation can change the effect of layer stepping, overhang quality, support contact, and the strength of thin features.
Does the layer count equal print time?
No. More layers usually increase print time, but time also depends on layer area, travel moves, speed, acceleration, infill, walls, and other slicer settings.
Should I make a test print?
A small test section or calibration model is useful because the calculator does not guarantee that material- and printer-specific behavior will match the estimate.
What layer height is best for small detailed 3D prints?
The calculator's fine-detail starting target is 25% of nozzle diameter. For a 0.4 mm nozzle, that is 0.10 mm.
