3D Printing Shipping (Commercial) Calculator
Estimate commercial shipping costs for 3D printed orders using package dimensions, weight, distance, carrier rates and fuel surcharge.
Overview
Use this commercial 3D printing shipping calculator to estimate the delivery cost of a packed order. Enter the carton dimensions, packed weight, order quantity, delivery distance and the carrier rates you use to estimate both the shipment total and shipping cost per printed item.
How it works
The calculator first converts package volume into volumetric weight by dividing the carton volume in cubic centimetres by 5,000. It compares this with actual packed weight and uses the higher figure as chargeable weight. The base fee, weight charge and distance charge are added together, then the fuel surcharge is applied. Finally, the total is divided by the number of printed items to show an allocated shipping cost per item.
How to use this calculator
- 1Measure the outside length, width and height of the packed carton.
- 2Enter the total shipment weight including the box and protective packaging.
- 3Add the number of printed items in the shipment.
- 4Enter your estimated delivery distance and carrier pricing rates.
- 5Review the total cost, chargeable weight and allocated cost per item.

A 30 × 20 × 15 cm package has a volumetric weight of 1.80 kg, which exceeds its 1.20 kg actual weight. The estimated shipment cost is 27.72, or 2.77 per printed item.
Frequently asked questions
What is chargeable weight for 3D printing shipments?
Chargeable weight is the weight a carrier uses for billing. It is usually the greater of the actual packed weight and volumetric weight.
Why does package size affect shipping cost?
Large lightweight parcels take up carrier capacity. Many carriers convert parcel volume to a volumetric weight and charge against that figure when it is higher than actual weight.
What volumetric divisor does this calculator use?
It uses 5,000 cubic centimetres per kilogram. Check your carrier's terms because divisors can vary by carrier, service and destination.
Should packaging weight be included?
Yes. Enter the complete packed shipment weight, including the carton, inserts, protective material, labels and all printed parts.
Does the estimate include customs duties or insurance?
No. Add those costs separately if they apply. The calculation covers only the base fee, weight rate, distance rate and fuel surcharge you enter.
How can I use the cost per item result?
You can use it as an internal allocation when pricing items, comparing fulfilment options or deciding whether to charge shipping separately.

Assumptions and warnings
Assumptions
- The calculation uses a volumetric-weight divisor of 5,000 cm³ per kg, which is common but varies by carrier and service.
- The carrier bills based on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight.
- The entered base, weight and distance rates represent the selected carrier service and do not include unlisted fees.
- The cost per item is an even allocation of the total shipment cost across all printed items.
- Results are estimates and may differ from a carrier quote.
Warnings
- This calculator provides an estimate only and is not a carrier quote.
- Actual commercial shipping charges can include remote-area, insurance, customs, handling, peak-season or minimum-charge fees.
