How it works

The calculator multiplies the estimated weight of one part by the number of parts. It then adds your chosen waste percentage to estimate total filament consumption. Your current stock is subtracted from that total, and any shortfall is divided by the usable spool weight and rounded up to a whole spool. The purchase estimate is the number of additional spools multiplied by the spool price.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra filament should I allow for 3D printing?

A 5% to 15% allowance is a practical starting point for routine jobs. Use a larger allowance when prints have heavy supports, frequent color changes, purging, or a meaningful risk of failure.

Should I include supports in the part weight?

If your slicer estimate already includes supports, skirts, brims, and purge material, enter that total as the part weight and use a smaller waste allowance for likely failed prints or testing.

Why does the calculator round up the number of spools?

Filament is normally purchased as complete spools. Even if the shortfall is less than one spool, one whole spool is needed unless you can source filament in another quantity.

What does a negative stock balance mean?

A negative stock balance is the estimated number of grams by which your current usable stock falls short of the planned batch requirement.

Can I use this calculator for resin printing?

The stock planning approach is similar, but this calculator is designed around filament weight and spools. For resin, use millilitres or grams of resin and account for losses from supports, vats, and cleanup separately.
