A/B Testing Cloud Cost Calculator FAQ
Answers to common questions about estimating A/B test infrastructure, event processing, storage, assumptions, and results.
Use these answers to understand what the A/B Testing Cloud Cost Calculator includes, how its estimates are derived, and where additional costs may need separate planning.
General calculator questions
What the calculator estimates and when to use it.
What does the A/B Testing Cloud Cost Calculator estimate?
It estimates incremental costs for experiment-related event processing, variant infrastructure, and test-data storage.
Who can use this calculator?
It can be used for website, product, mobile app, and feature flag experiments when you can estimate the related usage and unit prices.
Is the result a full cloud budget?
No. It is a planning estimate for the cost categories represented by the inputs, not a complete forecast of every platform or cloud charge.
Should the control count as a variant?
Yes. Enter the total number of variants, including the control, when it requires separate incremental infrastructure in your setup.
Inputs and calculation method
How visitor volume, events, variants, and time affect the result.
How are total test participants calculated?
Daily test visitors are multiplied by the number of test days.
How are additional events calculated?
Total test participants are multiplied by the additional tracked events entered per visitor.
How is infrastructure cost calculated?
Monthly infrastructure cost per variant is multiplied by variant count and by test duration in 30-day-month equivalents.
How is storage cost calculated?
The calculator multiplies total generated data by an average retention time equal to half of the test duration, then applies the GB-month rate.
Why are monthly costs prorated?
Prorating lets a monthly infrastructure or storage rate be estimated for experiments shorter or longer than a calendar month.
Accuracy and assumptions
Factors that can cause estimated and actual costs to differ.
How accurate is the cloud cost estimate?
Accuracy depends on the usage assumptions and rates entered. It is most useful for planning and comparing scenarios rather than predicting an invoice exactly.
Does the calculator include free tiers or minimum charges?
No. Enter an effective rate that reflects them if relevant, or adjust the result separately.
Are regional cloud prices included?
No. Use rates from the region, service tier, and pricing model relevant to your environment.
Does the calculator include taxes?
No. Taxes and billing adjustments are not part of the formula.
What if traffic changes during the test?
Use an average daily visitor estimate, or calculate separate periods and combine the results for a more detailed estimate.
Costs outside the estimate
Common charges to consider separately.
Does the calculator include data transfer or egress fees?
No. Estimate egress separately when experiment data, logs, or results are transferred between services or regions.
Does it include experimentation platform subscription fees?
No. Recurring platform subscriptions, seats, or contractual fees are outside the formula unless included in your infrastructure input.
Does it include database and API costs?
Not directly. Add those costs separately, or include their incremental amount in the monthly infrastructure cost per variant.
Does it include monitoring and observability costs?
Only if you account for their incremental usage through the event or infrastructure inputs. Dedicated monitoring charges are otherwise excluded.
What costs does the A/B Testing Cloud Cost Calculator include?
It estimates additional event processing, variant infrastructure, and storage for experiment data.
