Estimate your absence rate, daily pay value and potential salary reduction from paid and unpaid days away from work.

Your Details

Overview

This Absence Rates Salary (Individual) Calculator estimates the percentage of working time missed and the potential gross salary impact of unpaid absence. Enter your annual salary, annual working days, total absence days and any days paid in full.

How it works

The calculator divides annual salary by annual working days to estimate a daily salary value. It calculates the absence rate by dividing total absence days by working days, then multiplying by 100. Any paid absence days are removed from total absence before estimating the gross pay affected. Actual payroll calculations may use different rules, particularly for partial days, sick pay, variable pay and contractual entitlement.

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Enter your gross annual salary before deductions.
  2. 2Add the number of working days in your usual work year.
  3. 3Enter the total working days or part-days you were absent.
  4. 4Enter how many of those absence days were paid in full.
  5. 5Review your absence rate, daily salary value and estimated pay reduction.

Example Calculation

Annual salary

$52,000

Working days per year

260

Total absence days

8

Paid absence days

3

Absence rate

3.08%

With a salary of 52,000 and 260 working days, the estimated daily value is 200. Eight absence days equal an absence rate of 3.08%. If three days are fully paid, five unpaid days create an estimated gross salary reduction of 1,000.

Frequently asked questions

How is an individual absence rate calculated?

It is calculated as total absence days divided by total working days, multiplied by 100. For example, 8 days absent from 260 working days is 3.08%.

Does the calculator show take-home pay lost?

No. It estimates gross salary affected before tax, pension deductions, insurance and other payroll deductions.

Should annual leave be included as absence?

Usually no. Annual leave is normally planned paid time off rather than absence, but reporting definitions can differ between employers.

What counts as a paid absence day?

A paid absence day is a missed working day for which your employer pays your normal full rate. Check your contract or payroll policy if you are unsure.

Why might my employer's deduction be different?

Employers may use a different daily-rate method, apply sick-pay rules, pay statutory amounts, or account for shift patterns, overtime and partial days.

Can I use this for part-time work?

Yes. Enter the number of working days you personally work in a full year rather than a standard full-time figure.
