Social Media Engagement Goal Calculator
Estimate how many likes, comments, shares and saves you may need to reach a target engagement rate for a post or account.
Overview
This calculator helps you estimate how much engagement a social media post may need to reach a specific goal. Enter your audience size, expected reach rate, target engagement rate and the mix of likes, comments, shares and saves you want to plan for.
How it works
The calculator first estimates how many people will see your content by multiplying your audience size by your expected reach rate. It then applies your target engagement rate to that estimated reach to find the total number of interactions needed. Finally, it splits that total into likes, comments, shares and saves based on the percentages you entered. If those percentages do not total 100, the calculator normalizes them so the target still adds up correctly.

100
For an audience of 10,000 with a 20% reach rate, the post is estimated to reach 2,000 people. A 5% engagement goal means about 100 total engagements, including roughly 70 likes, 15 comments, 10 shares and 5 saves.
Frequently asked questions
What does this calculator estimate?
It estimates how many total engagements your content may need to hit a target engagement rate based on expected reach.
Is engagement rate based on followers or reach?
In this calculator, engagement rate is based on estimated reach, which is often more useful for planning individual post performance.
What counts as an engagement?
This calculator uses likes, comments, shares and saves as engagement actions. You can treat likes as reactions if that fits your platform.
What if my engagement mix does not add up to 100%?
The calculator automatically scales the percentages so they still split the total engagement goal proportionally.
Can I use this for any platform?
Yes. It can be used for platforms like Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, X or others, as long as your inputs reflect how that platform works.
Why is estimated reach important?
Not all followers see every post. Using estimated reach can give a more realistic target than using total audience size alone.
