What does the 3D Printing Quality Calculator do?

It estimates a relative layer detail score, layer-height ratio, practical maximum layer-height guideline, constant-height layer count and an XY detail reference.

Is the layer detail score a surface-finish measurement?

No. It is a simple relative indicator based on layer height versus nozzle diameter.

Which printing processes does this calculator suit?

It is intended for fused-filament printers, commonly called FDM or FFF printers.

Can I use it before slicing a model?

Yes. It can help compare possible nozzle, layer-height and line-width settings before printing.

Layer height and nozzle questions

How the vertical-detail calculations work.

What layer height should I use with a 0.4 mm nozzle?

Common choices range from about 0.12 mm for finer surfaces to 0.20 mm for a balanced print. Suitable settings depend on the material, model and printer.

Can layer height be larger than nozzle diameter?

That is generally impractical for normal FDM printing. The calculator uses 75% of nozzle diameter as a general upper guideline.

Is a lower layer-height ratio always better?

It generally improves vertical detail, but it also increases layer count and may not improve problems caused by cooling, extrusion or motion settings.

Why does the calculator show a maximum layer-height guideline?

It provides a general reference for comparing a selected setting with nozzle diameter. It is not a machine-specific operating limit.

Line width and model detail

What the XY reference means for small features.

What is the approximate XY detail limit?

It is the selected line width. Features narrower than one line may be difficult to reproduce consistently.

Does a smaller layer height improve horizontal detail?

Not by itself. Horizontal detail is strongly affected by nozzle size, line width, extrusion behavior and printer motion accuracy.

Should line width equal nozzle diameter?

It can be close to nozzle diameter, but slicer profiles may use a slightly wider line. Use the value selected for the relevant perimeter settings.

Can a narrow feature print if it is smaller than the line width?

Sometimes slicers and printers can produce thin walls in special cases, but results are not reliably predicted by line width alone.

Accuracy and layer count

Reasons estimates and finished prints may differ.

How is estimated layer count calculated?

The model height is divided by layer height and rounded up to the next whole layer.

Why does my slicer show a different number of layers?

It may use a different first layer, adaptive layers, rafts, support interfaces or other special layer settings.

Does the calculator estimate print time?

No. Layer count is only one input to print duration; speeds, geometry, infill, walls and travel also affect time.

Why does a print look rough despite a fine layer height?

Possible causes include material condition, extrusion calibration, cooling, vibration, seam placement, overhangs and model geometry.

Using results for comparisons

How can I compare settings for different nozzle sizes?

Compare their layer-height ratios and scores, then separately consider the line-width-based XY detail reference.

Can a larger nozzle provide similar relative layer detail?

Yes. Two setups with the same layer-height ratio receive the same relative score, although the larger nozzle usually has a wider XY feature reference.

Should I use the calculator result as a final print profile?

Use it as an estimate and test settings on the printer, filament and model type you plan to use.

What is a good layer height to nozzle diameter ratio?

Many FDM prints use ratios around 25% to 50%. Lower ratios can reduce visible stepping, while higher ratios can reduce the number of layers.
