How it works

The calculator starts with the fully solid volume of one container. It estimates material used by walls and base layers, then applies the selected infill percentage to the remaining internal volume. That estimated plastic volume is multiplied by the number of containers and filament density to calculate grams of filament. Finally, it adds your waste allowance and uses the price per kilogram to estimate material cost. Slicer output may differ because layer height, line width, supports, brims, seams, and actual wall geometry affect usage.

Frequently asked questions

What is the solid model volume for a 3D printed seed pot?

It is the volume the model would occupy if every part were printed as solid plastic. Many CAD tools and slicers can show this value in cubic centimetres or millilitres.

Why does this calculator ask for wall material separately from infill?

Seed pots usually use substantial wall and base material even at low infill. Separating it from infill gives a more useful estimate than applying infill to the whole model.

What filament density should I use for PLA?

A common PLA density is about 1.24 g/cm³. Check the filament spool or manufacturer data sheet, as blends and other materials can differ.

How much waste allowance should I add?

A 5% to 15% allowance is a reasonable starting range for routine prints. Use a higher allowance when supports, brims, purge material, or a greater risk of failed prints are expected.

Does the estimated cost include electricity?

No. The cost shown is for filament only. Electricity, printer wear, labor, and other costs are not included.

Will this match my slicer’s filament estimate exactly?

Not necessarily. Your slicer accounts for detailed geometry, wall count, layer height, line width, supports, and printer-specific settings, so it is generally the better final estimate.
