How it works

The calculator first multiplies plants needed per cycle by the number of planting cycles. It then adds your spare-plant allowance and divides the result by the expected germination rate to estimate how many seeds to sow. That seed total is divided by the number of cells in each tray and rounded up. Filament and print time are calculated by multiplying the number of trays by each tray's slicer estimate.

Frequently asked questions

How many extra seeds should I sow?

A common approach is to add 5% to 20% for weak seedlings and normal losses. You may need a larger allowance for old seed or challenging growing conditions.

Why does the calculator use germination rate?

Not every seed becomes a usable seedling. Dividing by your expected germination rate estimates the number of seeds needed to reach your plant target.

Should I include print supports in filament use?

Yes. Use the filament estimate from your slicer with the same walls, infill, supports, brim, and other settings you intend to print.

Does the material cost include electricity?

No. The cost estimate covers filament only. Electricity, maintenance, depreciation, and unsuccessful prints are excluded.

Can I use this calculator for succession planting?

Yes. Set planting cycles to the number of staggered sowings you plan to make during the season.

Why are tray quantities rounded up?

A partial tray may still be needed to hold the remaining seeds, so the calculator rounds to a whole number of trays.
