3D Printing Seed Calculator Examples
Worked examples showing how container volume, wall material, infill, density, and waste change seed pot filament estimates.
These examples use the calculator's planning method rather than a detailed slicer toolpath. They illustrate small seed-pot batches, larger runs, and the effect of different print settings on filament use and material-only cost.
Example 1: Six compact seedling cells
Print six 20 cm³ seedling cells with 40% wall and base material, 10% infill, 1.24 g/cm³ PLA, $20.00/kg filament, and 5% waste.

How to Read Your Results
Filament required is the estimated total for the full batch, including the waste allowance.
Material volume per container is before waste and helps compare different designs or infill settings.
Material cost covers filament only and uses the price per kilogram you enter.
Cost per container is useful for comparing designs, but it does not include printer operating costs.
Use the slicer's filament preview as the final check once walls, supports, and adhesion settings are known.
Assumptions & Important Notes
- Each example treats the quoted solid volume as the volume of a fully solid container.
- Filament density remains constant throughout each batch.
- Waste is applied as a percentage of calculated filament mass.
- Currency values are illustrative and represent material-only cost.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use these examples for a seed tray instead of individual pots?
Yes, if you enter the fully solid volume for one tray or one repeated tray section and use a wall estimate suited to that design.
Why does a low-infill pot still use substantial filament?
The walls, base, and top layers can make up much of a small container, especially when the shell is thick.
Does printing more containers lower the filament cost per container?
Not in this formula when all containers are identical. It may lower setup waste per unit in a real print if waste is shared across the batch.
Should I choose the same waste allowance for every project?
No. A simple print may need less allowance than one with supports, brims, material changes, or an uncertain failure rate.
