General calculator questions

Basic questions about what the calculator estimates and when to use it.

What does the 3D Printing Shipping Calculator estimate?

It estimates a parcel shipping charge using packed weight, external package dimensions, a dimensional divisor, a carrier rate, a base charge and a handling fee.

Who can use this calculator?

It can be useful for 3D printing sellers estimating delivery charges and buyers who want to understand how a quoted parcel cost may be built up.

Is the result a final postage quote?

No. It is an estimate. The final price can change with carrier service, destination, rounding, size limits and surcharges.

What currency does the calculator use?

It uses whichever currency is represented by the rate and charges you enter. Keep all monetary inputs in the same currency.

Weight and dimensions

Questions about measuring a printed order correctly.

What is packed weight?

Packed weight is the weight of the complete sealed shipment, including the printed item, packaging, padding, tape, labels and inserts.

Should I use the size of the print or the shipping box?

Use the outside dimensions of the final shipping box or parcel because dimensional weight is based on the space the shipment occupies.

What is dimensional weight?

Dimensional weight is a size-based billing weight calculated by dividing parcel volume by a carrier-provided divisor.

Why is the chargeable weight different from my scale weight?

The calculator selects the larger of actual packed weight and dimensional weight. This can make a bulky, light parcel billable at a higher weight.

Can protective packaging increase shipping cost?

Yes. Extra padding or a larger carton can increase the parcel's volume and dimensional weight, although protection remains important for fragile prints.

Rates and fees

Questions about the monetary inputs used in the estimate.

What should I enter as the carrier rate?

Enter the charge per billable kilogram for the service you are estimating, in your chosen currency.

What is the base shipping charge?

It is a fixed amount such as a booking, service or carrier base fee that applies in addition to the weight-based charge.

What belongs in the handling fee?

You may include packaging materials, packing labour or order-processing costs if you want the estimate to reflect those amounts.

Does the calculator include fuel or remote-area surcharges?

Not automatically. Add known charges to an appropriate entered fee only if that fits how you are using the estimate.

Accuracy and carrier rules

Questions about factors that can cause a real quote to differ.

Which dimensional divisor should I use?

Use the divisor published by the specific carrier and service you intend to use. A value of 5,000 cm³ per kg is an example, not a universal rule.

Do carriers round dimensional or chargeable weight?

Many carriers use their own rounding increments. This calculator does not add a carrier-specific rounding rule unless it is reflected in the values you enter.

Are customs duties and taxes included?

No. Import duties, sales taxes, VAT, brokerage and destination fees are separate from this estimate unless manually included in an entered charge.

How can I make the estimate more accurate?

Weigh the sealed parcel, measure its external dimensions, use the correct carrier divisor and rate, and compare the result with a current carrier quote.

Featured Answer

How is chargeable weight calculated for 3D print shipping?

Chargeable weight is the greater of the sealed parcel's actual packed weight and its dimensional weight.
