How to Read Your Results

Current storage need estimates the active library plus the selected number of complete backup copies today.

Projected storage need applies the expected 12-month growth rate but does not yet include spare capacity.

Recommended storage capacity adds 25% headroom to the projected storage need and rounds upward to a whole GB.

A result close to a common device capacity leaves little room if your file-size averages or growth estimate are too low.

Use averages taken from a representative sample of your own files for results that better reflect your library.

Assumptions & Important Notes

  • All examples use 1 GB = 1,024 MB.
  • A backup is treated as a complete separate copy of the library.
  • The projected growth percentage applies evenly to all stored copies.
  • The 25% allowance is general free-space headroom, not a guarantee of future capacity needs.

What is a realistic average STL file size for a storage estimate?

It varies widely. A sample of your own models is more useful than a generic average because mesh density, scan detail, and file format strongly affect size.

Should I count multiple G-code versions of the same print?

Count versions you plan to retain, such as files for different printers, nozzles, materials, or layer heights.

How do I estimate storage when my library contains different file types?

Add a representative mix of the files you keep and divide by the number of models, or estimate separate groups and combine their totals.

Why can a 1 TB drive show less usable space than expected?

Manufacturers may label capacity using decimal units while software may display binary units, and the drive format also uses some space.
