What does this 3D printing volume calculator estimate?

It estimates bounding volume, material volume including waste, material weight and raw-material cost for a production quantity.

What is a part bounding volume?

It is length multiplied by width multiplied by height, treating the part as a rectangular envelope.

Why is material volume different from bounding volume?

A printed part usually does not occupy every part of its rectangular envelope because of shape, empty space and partial infill.

Inputs and allowances

How the infill, shell, density and waste inputs affect results.

What does shell allowance mean?

It is an estimated percentage of the bounding envelope represented by walls, top layers and bottom layers.

What should be included in the waste allowance?

It can cover supports, brims, purge material, failed starts and routine handling loss.

Which material density should I enter?

Use the density supplied for the specific filament, resin or powder whenever available.

Can infill plus shell allowance be more than 100%?

You can enter those values, but the calculator caps their combined printed fraction at 100%.
