How it works

The calculator keeps your annual print volume fixed, then distributes it between off-peak and peak months. Each peak month is assigned the selected demand multiplier relative to an off-peak month. It multiplies monthly job volume by labour hours per job to estimate labour hours, and multiplies annual hours by the loaded hourly rate to estimate annual labour cost. Peak full-time-equivalent staffing is calculated by dividing peak-month labour hours by the productive hours available from one employee.

What counts as 3D printing labour?

Labour can include file preparation, quoting, machine setup, material loading, supervision, part removal, post-processing, quality checks, packing and customer handling. Decide which tasks to include in your average hours per job.

Does this calculator include machine printing time?

It estimates labour time rather than machine time. Include machine runtime only if an employee must actively attend the printer during that time.

How should I choose a peak demand multiplier?

Compare expected jobs in a busy month with a normal month. If you expect 200 jobs in a peak month and 100 in a normal month, use a multiplier of 2.

What is payroll burden and benefits?

Payroll burden is an allowance above base wages for employer-paid costs, such as payroll taxes, insurance, benefits and paid leave. The appropriate percentage depends on your location and employment arrangements.

What does FTE mean in the result?

FTE means full-time equivalent. A result of 0.75 FTE means the peak workload represents 75% of the productive monthly hours assigned to one full-time employee.

Why can peak staffing be higher than the annual average?

Seasonal demand concentrates more jobs into a smaller number of months. Even when annual labour hours remain the same, you may need additional capacity, temporary staff or overtime during peak periods.
