What files should be included in a 3D printing storage calculation?
Include original models such as STL, 3MF, and OBJ files, slicer projects, saved G-code, and versions you intend to retain. Estimate photos, videos, and renders separately if you archive them.
Does the calculator include physical printer storage?
No. It estimates digital file capacity only. It does not cover filament, tools, printer accessories, or physical workspace.
Can I use the result for a computer, external drive, NAS, or cloud plan?
Yes. The capacity estimate can be used to compare storage locations, although available features, pricing, speed, and backup behavior differ between them.
Is 1 TB enough for a 3D printing library?
It can be substantial for many hobby libraries, but high-resolution scans, textured models, project versions, media, and several backups can use space much faster.
Calculation inputs and formula

How are original models and sliced files combined?
The calculator adds the average original model size to the number of saved sliced files multiplied by their average size.
Why does the model count multiply the sliced-file estimate?
The calculation assumes each retained model has the stated average number of saved sliced files. This produces an estimated total for the whole library.
How are backup copies counted?
The active library is counted first. Each additional backup copy adds another complete library-sized copy.
How is annual growth applied?
The calculator multiplies storage including backups by one plus the annual growth rate expressed as a decimal.
Why is the final result rounded up?
Capacity is rounded upward because selecting less than the estimated requirement would not meet the projected need with headroom.
Accuracy and assumptions

Why might actual 3D printing storage use be different from the result?
Actual use depends on mesh complexity, embedded textures, project formats, slicer settings, duplicate versions, media files, and backup methods.
What does the 25% headroom mean?
It is an extra allowance added after projected growth to avoid planning storage at its limit and to accommodate normal variation.
Does the calculation account for compression or deduplication?
No. It treats each backup as a full uncompressed duplicate. Compressed or deduplicated systems may use less capacity.
Should I use decimal or binary gigabytes?
This calculator uses 1 GB = 1,024 MB. Device marketing labels may use a different convention, so compare the displayed usable capacity before selecting storage.

What is the difference between current storage need and recommended storage capacity?
Current storage includes the library and chosen backups today. Recommended capacity also includes expected growth for the next year and 25% headroom.
Should I enter zero sliced files per model?
Yes, if you do not retain sliced output files. The calculation will then include only the original model files and backups.
How can I get a more accurate average file size?
Review a representative sample of recent files, total their sizes, and divide by the number of files or models represented.
Can this calculator plan storage for a shared print collection?
Yes. Use the combined model count and representative file-size averages, while making sure the backup and growth inputs reflect the shared archive.
