What does the 3D Printing Waste Calculator estimate?

It estimates total filament required, material likely to become waste, the waste percentage and the estimated value of wasted filament.

What counts as filament waste in this calculator?

Supports, purge material, brims, skirts and expected material used by failed attempts count as waste because they are not retained in requested finished models.

Is total filament required the same as finished model weight?

No. Total filament includes finished model material plus planned waste and expected failed-print material.

Can I use the calculator before slicing a model?

Yes, but the estimate will be less precise. A slicer-derived model weight usually provides a better starting point.

Inputs and setup material

How to choose model weight, support percentage and planned setup waste.

Should model weight include supports?

No. Enter the finished model weight only. Add supports separately through the support material percentage.

Does model weight include infill?

Yes, if it comes from your slicer estimate. The model weight should reflect your chosen infill, walls, layer height and other part settings.

What should I include in setup waste?

Include planned purge lines, brims, skirts, transition purge, nozzle priming and similar disposable material per print.

How can I estimate support material?

Compare slicer estimates with and without supports when possible. Support weight divided by model weight, multiplied by 100, gives a usable percentage.

What if setup waste varies between models?

Use an average setup-waste value for similar prints, or calculate separate print groups when the variation is large.

Failure rate and formula questions

How the calculator allows for unsuccessful print attempts.

Why does a failure rate increase total filament required?

Failed attempts use material but do not produce a usable copy. Extra attempts are therefore needed to reach the requested number of successful copies.

How is failed-print material calculated?

The material for successful prints is multiplied by failureRate divided by 100 minus failureRate. This estimates replacement material needed at the selected success rate.

What happens at a 0% failure rate?

No expected failed-print material is added. The estimate includes only finished model material, supports and setup waste.

Why should I avoid using an extremely high failure rate for planning?

At high failure rates, expected material rises rapidly and real outcomes become more variable. Improving setup and validating a test print may provide a more useful estimate.

Does every failed print use the full amount of material?

Not necessarily. The calculator uses an average estimate; early failures may use less and late failures may use more.

Costs, accuracy and use cases

How to interpret cost results and the main factors that can change actual use.

Does the waste cost include electricity and labor?

No. It estimates the value of wasted filament only, using the entered cost per kilogram.

How accurate is the estimate?

Accuracy depends on input quality. Slicer weights, measured purge amounts and a realistic history-based failure rate improve the estimate.

Can I use the calculator to choose between print orientations?

Yes. Run each orientation with its own model, support and setup estimates to compare expected total material and waste.

Does it include spool leftovers or color changes?

It does not automatically include them. Add expected color-transition purge or other disposable material to setup waste.

Can I use it for a batch of different parts?

For a rough plan, use average inputs. For more precision, calculate each part group separately and add the totals.

Changing orientation, splitting a model, improving overhang design or adjusting support settings may reduce support use, depending on the part.

How can purge waste be reduced?

How can failed-print waste be reduced?

Consistent bed preparation, calibrated extrusion, suitable material handling and small validation prints can help identify preventable failures.
