Frequently asked questions
What counts as 3D printing labour?
Labour is the hands-on work needed to prepare, start, monitor, remove, finish, inspect and package a print. Unattended printer runtime is not normally treated as labour unless someone must actively supervise it.
Should I charge for machine print time as labour?
Usually, machine runtime is priced separately as machine overhead or a printer hourly rate. This calculator only includes the portion of runtime entered as active monitoring labour.
How do I estimate post-processing time?
Time one or more representative parts from removal through final inspection. Include support removal, washing, curing, sanding, assembly and packing that your job requires, then use an average per part.
Why is the labour cost per part lower for larger batches?
One-off setup time is spread across more parts. If the parts have identical finishing needs, the per-part cost falls as the batch grows, although post-processing still rises with quantity.
Does this calculator include filament, resin or electricity?
No. It estimates labour only. Add material costs, power, consumables, machine overhead, waste allowance and shipping separately when building a full print quote.
What hourly labour rate should I use?
Use a rate that reflects the cost or price of the person doing the work. Depending on your purpose, this may include wages, employment costs, workshop overhead and a margin.
